“Our family needed one-on-one care and hired our au pair to spend most of her time with our baby. With a new baby, we also didn't want our older children in daycare where they would be more prone to get sick.” – The Cukrowski Family

Sharing with your Area Director at AuPairCare in Virginia, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg

Sharing With Your Area Director

Many host families and au pairs view their area director as simply the agency representative who calls monthly.  Yet Area Directors can and should be so much more.  Confidante, resource, friend - these are all words I hope my cluster uses to describe me.

There are, of course, things you may not want to share.  This is understandable!  Yet there is so much that your Area Director should and wants to know!  Planning a move, an illness in the family, change in a host parent's job - all of these are things your Area Director may be able to help you with and in some cases, she needs to know.  She may have dealt with a similar situation in the past and have tips and tricks to help in your situation.  She may also know just the right thing to say or do.  It may also be an issue that requires her attention.  One excellent example is when a new baby will join the household.  Host parents understandably keep the news private at first, but keeping a secret for too long can be problematic.  Since the Department of State requires a Under 2 au pair to be in any home with childcare under 2 (even if she is not caring for them!), host families have been in a situation where an au pair must be removed.  While this situation may not have been avoidable, notifying your Area Director in a timely fashion might impact your selection process, or at least allow for a longer transition time with your new au pair.

The same goes for au pairs - let your Area Director know!  Sick parents, break up with a boyfriend....again, things your Area Director wants to know about!  All of these directly affect host families and au pairs and can have an impact on the success of your match.  An au pair who has just ended a relationship may be depressed or sad.  Sharing what is happening with both your host family and Area Director keeps those communication lines open, and alerts them to any issues you may be having.

Children need Quality Child Care even in a Recession. For example an au pair in Virginia, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg

Below is an article taken from the 2011 Report by the
National Association of Child Care Resources and Referral Agencies

Doesn't an au pair fit every category they address?  Look into having an
au pair through AuPairCare.

Children Need Quality Child Care,
Even in a Recession

The current economic recession makes child care
choices even more difficult for parents. CCR&Rs report
that parents are moving their children from licensed
programs to informal child care settings. These options
may be less expensive, but they are of unknown quality.
There is no check for basic health and safety standards
and other practices that promote healthy
child development.

NACCRRA is concerned about whether children will be
safe and will start school with the skills to succeed.
Full-time employment among families with children
under age 6 and among families with school-age children
ages 6 to 12 has declined since 2008. While full-time
employment is lower, part-time employment
has increased.

Care during nontraditional hours, part-time care and
temporary care are all difficult to find and consequently
tend to be more expensive.
The high cost of child care forces parents to make
difficult decisions. Parents want high-quality child care
for their children. Unfortunately, safety, health and
school readiness comes at a cost that many parents
cannot afford.

How are au pair agencies different?

I was recently talking with another new area director and she asked why our agency was different from other agencies.  Here's one difference that I think is very important.  AuPairCare has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.  What does that mean?  I googled it to get the answer and here's what I found:  The grade represents BBB's degree of confidence that the business is operating in a trustworthy manner and will make a good faith effort to resolve any customer concerns filed with BBB.

Now, I challenge you to ask the other agencies their rating.  If you don't receive a satisfactory answer, chances are their rating isn't very good.  I think that speaks volumes for AuPairCare and I am happy to be working for a company that earns this rating.

Schedules for AuPairCare au pairs in Virginia, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg

I'd like to chat about schedules.  Everyone has a crazy schedule and everyone's schedule varies.  But, when thinking about a schedule for your au pair, try to find something that is consistent.  Maybe you'll be able to allow the au pair to consistently have Saturday nights off, maybe it's Sunday evenings, or even Thursday evenings.  Having a few consistencies in an au pair's life will help ground them in our culture.

Whenever you find the time to consistently give your au pair off, plan for your own family to do something fun.  It doesn't have to be crazy, complicated fun.  When my kids were younger we watched America's Funniest Home Videos every Sunday night.  The kids looked so forward to the alone time w/ mom & dad that they would clean up their rooms, make their lunches for school the next day and start asking us when it started.  I was amazed how much they looked forward to consistently watching the show w/ us.  Because it was scheduled, they anticipated it.  Plan your own family time at the same time your au pair is given off.  Everyone in the house will come back refreshed and reengergized.

Here's a schedule http://www.aupaircare.com/au-pair/typical-schedule to help you make your own schedule.

Do I have to work on an American Holiday if I'm an au pair in Virginia, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Suffolk, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg

Yes. Au Pairs do not automatically receive national holidays off. However, each au pair should talk with their host family about which holidays the au pair will have off. If the au pair would prefer to have their own country's national holidays off, discuss this with the host family. Keep in mind that the family is not required to give the au pair holidays off, so try not to ask for too many. When the au pair and host family have reached an agreement about holidays, write them down so that there is no confusion in the future.

They may not be "my au pairs", but I wish they were

The other day I was talking with a family that assumed I had an au pair because of my job as an Area Director for AuPairCare.  While talking with the family I kept referring to “my au pairs”.  I wasn’t trying to be misleading; I do honestly feel as if each and every au pair I’m in charge of is “my au pair”.  I love them all and am close to them.  The conversation went on as to why I took a 15 year break from working while my kids were growing up.  I’d like to talk a little about that because that is one of the reasons I took this job and am so passionate about it.
15 years ago, I had a great career working in advertising.  My client was Toyota Motor Sales USA.  One of the largest advertising accounts in the US.  I was in charge of a several million dollar program for Toyota and ran the show.  I loved my work, loved heading the meetings, loved the travel, loved the client dinners, and loved the adrenaline and high pressure of such a business and account.  I was also married to a United States Coast Guard man.  Hence, I moved around and continued to do my job from where ever we were located traveling to the clients and headquarters monthly while utilizing the virtual office.  While pregnant with my first child, I started thinking about childcare.  My known options, at that point, were daycare or nanny hunting.
For me daycare was not an option.  While I understand the benefits of such care, I, personally, couldn’t get past the institutionalism of the idea.
The other option was a nanny.  I didn’t relish the idea of having a nanny that wasn’t completely screened and I felt as if my family would simply be hoping the “crazies” wouldn’t answer our search for help.  It was just too hard to trust my child with that situation.  Also, what exactly would a nanny teach my children?  Could I guarantee an education?  Could I guarantee they weren’t w/ us just for the money?  If they had family and friends locally would they take my children around them?  What kind of people would they be?  What kind of influence would a nanny be?  There were just too many unknowns and variables beyond my control.  Therefore, I stopped my work and raised my two children.
While talking with this family I told them that had I known about the au pair system, I am absolutely certain I would have enlisted an au pair and been able to continue on a successful career path.  Working mothers today are so fortunate to have a pool of au pairs that are screened, educated, appropriate ages, genuinely here to help raise your children and you, and want to participate in cultural exchange.  They are here for you.
Another big advantage of au pairs is their flexibility.  And I’m not talking about flexibility in when they work (which is a whole different benefit).  I’m talking about flexibility if you move; if your life changes.  For example, when families have military orders to move or they need to move for their career, their au pair will move to the new location with them.  What a relief for those children & parents to have a consistent caregiver through a stressful time.  Neither has to go through the stress of finding childcare in a new area.  The whole family has consistency in taking care of the children.  When my husband was receiving orders to move to another base or location, I couldn’t fathom looking for childcare each time.  That would have been too much trauma for the children and me.
So if I refer to “my au pairs” as my au pairs, it’s just because I think of them that way and I wish I had known about au pairs way back when.
